Back to the Banks 09

Checked out Back to the Banks this past Saturday. Pretty fun. A lot going on. Got to see neckface, szafranski, caswell berry, etc. While I was walking around, I wasn't paying attention and accidentally ran into somebody. Looked up and it was Berra. I just kinda said sorry and walked off.

Lots of tricks went down. Back 360, double flip, bs flip over the rail. Some kid did a kickflip nosegrind on it. A lot more happened, but I can't really remember at the moment.

Derek and I left the house to go jogging this afternoon, but after only getting about 2 blocks from the house a tiny dog, which we later learned was a mix between a cocker spaniel and a poodle, started following us. Since it wouldn't stop and that it was possible it was going to run into the busy street we were trying to cross, we decided to just pick it up and bring it with us to the track. I'm pretty sure it made us look like a gay couple..

After the run we brought it back to the house, called the animal shelter, and they found the owner who had called it in missing about an hour before.

X and Richie caught the train up Friday afternoon to stay for the weekend.

Ended up meeting them at World Trade so we could walk to the brooklyn banks. Got a few clips then left to skate Jersey. Our first stop was at Black Flag Shoppe so Richie could pick up some new trucks. We get there and were instantly greeted with beer and conversation. Great people. We get the trucks then head out to Patterson, NJ to this sketchy drop in that X attempts a few times, but after getting wrecked we leave.

Next day we wake up early and head to NY with Jessica as our guide. We skate some spot near battery park then move on to the pyramid ledges and a spot near china town. Stacked up a good amount of footage. After shredding all day we head to Jersey City for a small get together. Got home around 4:30am, didn't go to sleep until the sun was coming up, then got woken up at 10am. Went out for breakfast at a little family owned diner then thrashed around at some brick pyramids.

Their train departed at 330 so we went to Newark, but got a little lost. Asked someone for directions and he ended up having a switch blade and a .22 that he tried to sell us. Awesome.

Left spring break back to NJ except this time accompanied by Andy, Sean, and Ryan. Glad to finally have some visitors.

When we got there that afternoon, we visited some friends who go to Pace in NYC. Stayed the night in the city then came back to Jersey the next day. Had to deal with some old apartment things so we didn't get to skate.

Next day we finally ventured to Clifton and got directions to local spots from Omar at Black Flag Shoppe. Skated the brick pyramid banks again and then followed him to some new spot I had never been in Patterson. Sean took most of the photos from this weeks trip.

New Years Eve with Gwar

Gwar played at the National tonight for New Years Eve.

The show started at 8pm, which was the same time I was supposed to get out of work, but luckily my manager understood how epic this event was going to be and agreed to let me duck out early

I met up with Brian, Andy, and DJ around 8. Andy was suppose to get a bottle of Night Train for this amazing occasion, but had to settle for a normal bottle of cheap wine. This was a regular size bottle of wine and Andy chugged the bitch in only two gulps; all while sitting in Brian's back seat. It was amazing to witness. After he was done chugging, the bottle was left in the street and we went to the National.

They opened the show with the Richmond Lucha Libre. Wrestling and Gwar? Yes please. Afterwards was the opening band whose name escapes me right now. The lead singer reminded us of a juggalo, which was kinda a turn off. He did have a crazy mask and kept referring to the crowd as emosexuals. That part was pretty good.

Finally Gwar came on stage. Epic. All the money I dropped on expensive beer at the show was made up for when they came out.
One of the gnarliest experiences of my life. Oderus came on stage with an infant in his hands. He ripped the fucker in half then placed each half on the corpse on the huge spikes on his shoulders.
It was their Electile Dysfunction tour so everything was politic related. They had John McCane come out and they ripped his face off. Later Hillary Clinton and Obama showed up. They decapitated Obama then ripped Hillary's tits off. Typical Gwar style, blood and shit was spraying everywhere. I plan on never washing this shirt. In the end, any band whose lead singer gets a 40lb crack rock syringed in his dick, is going to be an awesome show. If you ever get the chance to see Gwar live, do it. Everybody should experience this at least once in their lifetime.

When the show ended, Brian, Andy, and I ventured to Waffle House. We stuck out a bit.

40 In My Left

Shot a music video for Black Liquid last night for his song "40 In My Left". Brian and Andy came along to help out. Shit was intense. All of Rob's crew was there, each one with at least 2 40's.

We got there at little after 10pm and shooting ended around 3. Long night.
The song was all about drinking 40's and smoking weed...so that's what we filmed.

Halloween part 2

After I got back from Conan, I began preparing my costume..which basically means shaving a handlebar moustache. That pretty much took forever. It came out alright, but complemented the cut-offs and Lynard Skynard shirt quite well. I think I pulled off the white trash look. Once Derek got to campus, I met up with him and we caught the train to Jersey City for a party at Richard's brothers apartment. The party was decent, but I didn't know too many people. I just hung out with the keg. After a few hours later we caught the train back to Penn Station and then a taxi to the University Center. Amanda was nice enough to let us crash at her place.

Halloween part 1

I've had tickets for Late Night with Conan O'brien for today on reserve for over a month. Tickets are pretty hard to get a hold of, especially Friday tapings. I got pretty lucky, especially it being Halloween. So as the date came closer to attend, everybody that was suppose to go with me basically bailed out and I was left going alone. Kinda awkward.
Getting to NYC gets to be a pretty tedious journey. I had to duck out of Circus Arts class early. Yes, thats a real class. I had to catch the shuttle to the U.C., walk down the block to the light rail, catch the light rail to Newark Penn, then get on the train to the city. After getting dropped off at New York Penn Station I had to find NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller. Having no clue where to go, I called Brandon my living GPS. He gave me directions and it was only about 18 blocks away.

By the time I get to NBC, I still have about an hour and a half to kill. I lurked around and ate at a deli called Dean & Deluca. It was decent. I spent the remainder of my time walking in circles around the same block listening to the same band on loop. Exciting!

I walk back to NBC around 3:45 and they give me a ticket and say I'm #4. They told me I could leave and come back at 4:30, the ticket would hold my place in line. I ended up just siting on a set of church steps people watching until it was time to go back.

When I get back inside, I have to wait in a line to enter the actually studio. The security guy there kept repeating "No sitting, spitting, or littering". I can't imagine them having a huge problem with people spitting inside the building. I'm also told that all cellphones must be turned off and no photography is allowed. So much for taking pictures. I did end up getting a good seat through. Right above the band, directly behind the keyboardist. The whole set is much smaller than I thought. It always seems pretty big on t.v. Before it started this guy came out and just kinda joked around with the audience and explained how everything works and when we are suppose to applaud. Next, the band came out, and then finally Conan. He spoke to us for a bit then went backstage to get ready for his on air intro. Overall it was pretty funny. The guests were Mary-Kate Olson, Will Forte, and some "extreme" pumpkin carver. You should be able to watch the episode here

I had to help Billy film a video project today, so we set out to venture the surrounding areas. While filming the streets, these girls walked by and asked (well, actually yelled) if we were tourist. I guess because I had a video camera in my hand and was filming Billy walking. Obviously I answered "yes" and explained to them that we were visiting the States from Canada. Of course they believed me, but couldn't wrap their head around the idea of why someone would want to visit New Jersey. I don't think I would have been able to figure that out either.

Jeff and Brian's last day here. We got directions to a really fun spot in what we called "Spanish Harlem in NJ". Brick banks and an oversize three.

It started to get pretty crowded

So many close calls with the tiny kids and bikers. Would have been a collision of epic proportions.

So we left, and met up with everybody for a big monopoly sesh. Jeff and Brian left at around 12:45 that night to go back to VA. As soon as they pulled out Brian noticed that he left his keys, so he came back and rang the doorbell. I guess the downstairs tenant heard him and gave him shit for being loud. I found out this morning that the guy thought Brian, you know..with the drug free tattoo's and all, was delivering us drugs. Yay for assumptions and judging people based on looks.

NYC

We all woke up at 9, warmed up at the bench spot again, met up with Danielle, and made our way to NYC. We got there, ate, and then lurked around for a bit before catching a taxi to the Brooklyn Banks.

It was really crowded this time. Lots of skaters, bikers and onlookers.

We left the banks and walked around forever, eventually finding a fun manual pad to play at.

Filthadelphia

Jeff, Brian, and I decided to escape Jersey and go to a city that is one notch above in cleanliness. Philadelphia.

This ended up being a really good day to go because there was some Sarah Palin demonstration march going on and apparently all the cops were there thus making Love Park and other normally unskateable spots, skateable. Love was crowded as shit so we didn't stay there too long. Instead we migrated across the street to City Hall.

So Brian had bought a new deck a few hours before and was trying a noseslide shove-it noseslide on a ledge. His board flew out and landed in a gross-ass fountain.

The aftermath

We left Philly and drove to the Brio in Cherry Hill. Of course it's baller status again. Saturday night? No reservations? Long wait? Oh, your with Jeff. Yeah, a table just opened up. So we get seated right away, recieve free drinks and appetizers, and get 50% off the meal. Good end to the trip.

We drive back to Newark and to a small gathering that Amanda was having.

Tomorrow--NYC

So Jeff was suppose to drive up and arrive early this morning. He gets here around 7am and when I go out to meet him, Brian is in the car. Nice surprise. It's good to have some VA kids in Jersey.

Me, Danielle, Brian, and Jeff drove to Black Flag to get some addresses for some local skate spots. Ended up skating a little bit out front. I'm glad I have my intern back.

We end up playing around at a tennis court that has a few benches. One or two runs were landed.

There were sweet tarts scattered all around the court so obviously we used them as chalk.

Rainy bike rides are the best bike rides

No one ever wants to hang out so now its up to me to entertain myself. That means riding a bicycle on days it's suppose to thunderstorm. I packed up some water and a chain and headed for Eagle Rock Reservation this afternoon. Its only about 5 miles there, but its all uphill.

It started to rain about 15 minutes into the trip, so I decided to look like a homeless person by sitting underneath this fake shelter.

After noticing that it wasn't about to quit raining, I decided just to keep riding.

You can't really tell from the horrible cellphone photos, but it's basically like riding up the side of a mountain. It's just steep and windy.

I stopped halfway up because I noticed a deer. I looked around and saw 7 more. That was a nice change of scenery.

So I get to the top, and of course it's too cloudy and overcast to see the sites. I sat for about 20 minutes just listening to music and staring at what would be the NYC skyline then decided it was time to leave because the rain was coming down harder.

Going down was a lot quicker, but also a lot more terrifying. Although the rain and wet breaks helped me learn how to skid out my bike tire to slow down. By the time I started the journey back the rain was fucking pouring.

I made it to Bloomfield Ave. where these two assholes in a car decided to pull over..right where I was riding. So they're pulling over and the car is sideswipping me. My entire bike, and I guess myself, is rubbing up against their car because we continue to go the same speed. It sucks because there were cars parked on the side of the street directly to my right and the fuckers in the car continued to close me in tighter. My back tire starts to slide out, but somehow I manage to not eat shit. This whole time the passenger window is down and the woman is screaming "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD. Stop, you're hitting him!" They finally come to a stop and yell something else at me cause I'm dragging my hand across the side of their car as I ride away.

I fucking hate people.

Mets game

My roommate got free tickets to the Mets vs. Braves game today in New York.
Its hard for baseball to hold my interest, but it was an interesting trip.

I constantly got distracted by everything around me.

For instance, there was this little asian kid who got lost and constantly walked back and forth past us looking for his parents. That lasted a good 15 minutes. The security guy didn't even bother to acknowledge him.

The guy one row behind us was by himself and kept yelling the stupidest shit at the worst times. "Lets grill these guys!" was a popular one.

Lets see, Chipper Jones broke a bat in half while hitting a ball. I don't know if that is common in baseball, but I liked it.

I guess since we have the minor league Richmond Braves, I like the Atlanta Braves? I don't know. Maybe I'm just an asshole who wants the team that everybody hates to win..you know, so I can rub it in their face.
Either way, it worked. The Mets were winning up until the last inning. The Braves caught up then won.

Cookouts are the new black

Danielle and I went to Rich, Billy, and Mike's miniature cookout tonight. They randomly brought a grill with them to campus and tried to have a bbq out on their front lawn - security ended that pretty quickly. We then moved it to the back of the Deacon's Den.

Liberty Cookout

So we had a cookout at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Fuck that place is nice. To the left is the NYC skyline and straight ahead is the Statue of Liberty. Such nice views.

So we get there and it is windy as fuck. We have 3 matches. Of course the grill won't get lit. So after trying to light the charcoal on fire, then trying to light paper on fire which will then hopefully light the charcoal, we run out of matches. We sit around for an hour and a half trying to find a lighter until Rich's brother finally arrives with one. Hotdogs, fake hotdogs, burgers, chicken, and chicken wings. Good meal.

Bicycles and Black Flags

So I decided it was time to take the bike on an adventure today. It had been a little over a year since the last one. Destination Black Flag Shoppe in Clifton. A 7.7 mile ride there and a 7.7 mile ride back. Not too bad. Only managed to get mildly lost on they way there.

So I get there and Omar surprisingly remembered me. He and his wife hooked me up with a bottle of water and then lunch later on. Thats how you know good people.

He also said that he could hear footsteps the night before. Sorry, we don't have segways. He knocked on the door at 10:30 a.m...he had a beer in his hand. Goodbye credibility.

Best Friends Day

Best Friends Day 7 was this week. Met up with Brian in the morning and rode mopeds to Hadad's lake for the event. Got there, met up with Andrew and lurked around. There were a lot more people this year compared to the previous one.

Grayson eventually made it up and was even kind enough to give me one of his two tall boys. Then we played rope swing.
There was also a million foot high inflatable water slide that ate your skin if you rode down on your chest.

Then we played climb on Grayson's brothers car.

Ended BFD by watching Ultra Dolphins play. I had been wanting to see them live for a while.

We got back on our mopeds, rode for about 5 minutes, then Brian's ped cut off and wouldn't start running again. We were left stranded in basically the middle of nowhere. Roger was kind enough to drive forever to come pick us up.

Day4 Last Day

We all woke up fairly early and Danielle brought us to the beach. Surprisingly, Jersey beaches aren't that bad...att least cleaner than VA Beach. So now my back and the back of my legs are sunburned. Yay for just laying on the stomach.
After the beach we met up with Dani's friend Stacy and headed for Bloomfield so I could sign the lease for the apartment. My phone was still dead, but here is a photo of it that somebody else sent me a while ago.

So stoked.

After visiting the realator, we drove to Cherry Hill which is right outside of Philly to eat at Brio. Jeff knows people and gets huge discounts. We eat until we are all complaining about wanting to throw up. We drive back, almost get in a head on collision, then right as we are about to go to sleep we decide to drive back to Richmond.

Thanks to Dani and Derek for places to stay and good times.

Day3

Wake up early for Brooklyn banks attempt 2. We win this time. Discovered that the banks are located on the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn bridge, so we go catch subway over there. This time we get to travel over the bridge rather than underground.

We get to the Brooklyn banks which is a lot bigger than I imagined. I'll post more photos once the nikon is done charging.

Filmed some tricks on the banks then left on the search for food through Chinatown.

Every little restaurant we stepped in seemed to hate us. Surprise. We settled for a Vietnamese place.

Caught the train back to Brooklyn. While walking back to Derek's place we found a hat store that does custom lettering. Jeff's reppin' us to the fullest.

Got back to Dereks, packed up, then left for Danielle's in Bayville.
Adventure part two. My phone charger broke from the flooding and my phone died so I couldn't take any more pictures, but we went to Seaside that night to lurk the boardwalk, spot Guido's, and ride go-carts. Fun night.

Day2

Wake up and everybody is stoked to go to the Brooklyn Banks. We step outside and it's thunder storming. Woo! It slows down so we walk down the street to get some breakfast and all of a sudden it starts coming down hard again. We jump in a taxi cause Derek has to pick something up for his job. The taxi driver asks us if we like Bon Jovi and before we could answer, he starts blaring it. I laughed.
By the time time Derek was done doing everything at his work, the storm had passed and it was almost dry. We took the bus to the Queens Mall to kill some time before everything was completely dry. We catch the subway back to Derek's to find that the basement we were living in flooded. While Derek cleaned that up, Jeff and I left to film some runs across the street (we're good friends like that). I'll put up a clip later.

When Derek finishes, we walk down the street to a little Mexican restaurant, eat, then go back to his place to drink on the porch a bit. Some of Derek's friends come over and I'm awkward around people I don't know so Jeff and I leave to push around the city. I hate skating in front of people, but I'm under the influence enough to not care. Jeff says I skated into a tree. I don't remember.

Woke up and picked up Jeff. Got out of Richmond at about 9am. Hit traffic everywhere. Mucho fun. Lets see, I was suppose to meet up with the realator in Bloomfield, but there was some miscommunication and she had to catch a flight..and was pissed that I was coming. So after her yelling at me for a few minutes, I gave up, and wound up getting lost, driving through Jersey City. Not sure how. I Escaped and made it to Bloomfield thinking that's where I was suppose to meet up with Derek. Call him..he's in Jersey City. Fuck. I drive another 30 mins. back to Jersey City where he's helping bring in kegs for the party. Pick him up and drive to Brooklyn.
Driving into Brooklyn was the worst traffic ever. Took these from the car.

Finally got to Derek's place, changed, and Jeff and I wonderd around outside while Derek waited for his friend.

Derek's friend comes so we finally catch the train back to Jersey City for Rich's party/beer pong tournament thing.
Small apartment + lots of people - air conditioning = too hot to have fun. I did get to see a few friends from school who I hadn't seen since first semester of last year. Jeff and I eventually left to skate around outside until Derek and his friend were ready to bounce.

I also met a cowboy and a homeless guy who kept talking to me about being in Nam. As he watched Andy skate he "taught" me how the pro's on TV do it. The key is glue on their feet. He seen it!

Ended the night with a 4th of July party at Brandon and his brothers. There were these two bro's there that were super stoked on their own beerpong ability, it was ridiculous. They were entirely too old to be that into the game. I wanted to take their picture, but it was dark out and my phone doesn't have a flash.
